  • New Classrooms and New Teachers for This Coming Summer

A separate building in which we can house two classrooms simultaneously is under construction and will be ready for summer programs and the beginning of the new school year in September.

We have hired a full time assistant to Miss Devi and classes for the younger children are being held five days a week

A Math teacher was also hired and he has classes on the weekends right after Mr. Deepak's classes (both Saturday and Sunday)

Our students are regularly being called on to participate in all Town Council events - most recently they performed at the MASH celebrations in February (Republic Anniversary Day)

  • Abraham's Tent collaborates with The CIOG

The CIOG is one of the if not the largest charitable organization in Guyana. One of their projects is the Sponsor-a-Child Program whereby they donate to underprivileged children, regardless of religious or ethnic background,  a monthly stipend to assist with food, transportation, clothes and books. These children will most likely drop out of school if not for this help.

Abraham’s Tent has been contributing to this program for a number of years now and utilizes the database and field support provided by CIOG in supporting a number of these children in the amount of $40.00 per month.

  • An enormous THANK YOU to the Estate of Dr. Lloyd Old

On Fri Oct 10, a donation of hundreds of books on Art, Art History, Music and Literature was made by the representatives of Abraham’s Tent Inc to the Burrowes Art Institute at their Carifesta Ave premises.

Executives of the institute, Mr Russ Thom and Ms Volda Ramsammy and also many students were on hand for the event as were the President of Abraham’s Tent Inc. Mr Shamim Ibrahim and their representative in Guyana, Mr Armaan Ibrahim.

The extensive collection was donated to Abraham’s Tent by the Estate of Dr Lloyd Old, a world renowned research scientist in the field of Oncology whose protégé, Guyanese-born Dr Padmnanee Sharma, now also a renowned research scientist in the same field, is a Board Member of Abraham’s Tent Inc.

The representatives of the school expressed their gratitude stating that it would be a valuable addition to the Institute’s library that could not have come at a better time. They also exhorted the students to make full use of this gift by dedicating at least some of their spare time in the library, thereby improving themselves academically and artistically. Ms Lawrence noted that it was an article in one of the local newspapers with some of the artwork of the students that caught the eye of a member of Abraham’s Tent which resulted in Burrowes being nominated for this donation.

It is the organization’s hope that this can be expanded to include more students and also academic and recreational activities that will mold these children into becoming productive citizens.

Abraham’s Tent Inc is dedicated to helping in whatever way possible to make education accessible to all and to level the playing field for those who are not provided with the necessary resources.

  • Students receieve help from Abraham's Tent and NGO

    From the Guyana Times;

    Amerindian students
    receive support from NGO

A medical student currently on scholarship, and Amerindian students living at the hostel in Corriverton, received some resources from a non- governmental organisation, Abraham’s Tent, recently.

Thirty students from Orealla and Siparuta who reside at the hostel were recipients of a quantity of stationery, school supplies, CXC text books, and ink for the facility’s computer. The NGO also presented a cheque for (Guyanese) $50,000 to the caretaker of the hostel, Pamela Chacon, for a female student, Angela Henry who has benefitted from a government scholarship in the medical field. The financial support is meant to help sustain Henry in her pursuit to be a medical doctor.

Speaking at the simple ceremony, local spokesperson for the non- profit organisation Armaan Ibrahim stated that the group, which has members in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, is the brainchild of his sister, Yasmin Ibrahim.

The group aims to help wherever and whenever possible in the process of educating those in need.

The group, which consists of mainly family members, is dedicated to providing the tools and necessary materials for the nation’s children to secure a brighter future.

Abraham’s Tent has committed itself to supporting the students who live at the hostel as they pursue higher education which is not available to them in the remote village of Orealla and satellite village of Siparuta in the Corentyne River.

To those of the students here today, we ask one thing in return for our assistance. We ask that each and every one of you make a firm commitment to work hard at your studies and become successful men and women in the future, and to give back. What I mean by ' give back' is that one day when you find yourself in the position to assist someone else, do so.

And if possible, give some of your time and energy to Abraham’s Tent, so that together, we can continue helping others for a long, long time,

Ibrahim said in his charge to students.

The village captain of Orealla, McLean De Vair was at the ceremony, and uttered brief remarks in appreciation for the gesture and the group’s longterm commitment to children.
